NEW Book store items coming soon!

Just a quick notice about some upcoming items for the book store. Vivian has ordered some new gift type products, which should arrive in time for the new Church Year.


Also, Wendy M. has taken over the library. Thanks once again to Andrea for her work in refurbishing the collection & circulation system.

Lenten Reading

First Fruits of Prayer: A Forty-Day Journey through the Canon of St. Andrew by Frederica Mathewes-Green.

I read this last Lent as a devotional. It's a nice way to learn something about the Canon, which we serve Monday and Tuesday in the first week of Lent (as well as in the fifth week, when the life of Mary of Egypt is read).

We have a 'super-loan' copy in the library right now if you want to have a look; and a couple of copies for purchase in the book store too.

Another book I can recommend for Lent is Egeria's Travels. This Western pilgrim to the church in Jerusalem described for her 4th Century audience the Lenten and Holy Week customs of the Holy Land, and her account is just as fascinating for us today.

Come celebrate our newly refurbished library and bookstore with us after Liturgy.

Many new volumes have been ordered in!

In future, this blog will post news and reviews of books acquired, and events sponsored by the library/bookstore. Interested in reviewing, or know a book you think should be reviewed? Please leave a comment, or contact Andrea.

Meanwhile, have a look at the links in the sidebar. There is a poll asking what materials you are interested in...please have a go at it. You may choose more than one answer.

Until the parish website is revamped, this blog will feed to Spruce Island.

Suggest a book for review

Reviewers, please use the comments function in this post to make suggestions of book (or CD) titles to be reviewed here/acquired by the library.

Only reviews of books actually acquired by the library will be posted online; but if you wish to do an 'on spec' review of a book you have read and submit it to Fr. Lawrence for approval, we will consider placing a copy of the book in the library. e-mail it to me matdonna {at} shaw dot ca

Readers of this blog, we also want to hear your suggestions of titles for consideration-- please mention them in your comments. If you have an URL to a review and/or preview of the book, please include it in your comment post.

Note to Saint Herman's book reviewers

We are changing the name of the library from "Kenosis" which no longer seems to fit. The Three Holy Hierarchs will now be our patrons, as they are patrons of learning.

I don't know yet what I'll do with the title and URL of this blog-- both may change, along with the look of it-- but meanwhile, if you have agreed to be a volunteer reviewer, you will be added to the author list here. You don't need to do anything else at the moment.

Further news will be announced when we have it.
